Gardasil – HPV vaccine

Almost all cases of cervical cancer are related to HPV. Some types of the virus may also cause vaginal and vulvar cancer in women and anal cancer both in men and women. Other types of the same virus may be responsible for venereal warts in men and women.

HPV is widely spread. It is estimated that 75-80% of men and women will be infected by HPV in their lifetime.

It is possible to be exposed to the virus during each sexual activity with an infected person. Prophylactics do not provide 100% protection in that case.

Frequently HPV does not show any symptoms. Therefore, it is worth remembering that:

  • If you are 15-24 years old – you are in a “risk group”;
  • HPV infection is often symptomless;
  • 8 out of 10 women and men are infected with the virus during their lifetime;
  • There are a few dozen types of HPV. Some of them may cause cervical cancer, they are responsible for vulvar, vaginal, rectal, penile cancer, formation of genital warts and laryngeal papillomatosis.

Cervical cancer is the second most prevalent, after the breast cancer, tumour in women. If you regularly do cytology tests, you make the first step to protect yourself against this extremely dangerous disease. You can do even more. HPV vaccines are multi-targeted and they protect against:

  • Cervical cancer
  • Vulvar cancer
  • Vaginal cancer
  • Anal cancer
  • Genital warts

9-valent papilloma virus vaccine is recommended for active immunisation of persons from the age of 9.
